The Original Free'kend

Competition Formats

The heart of Free’kend consists of three competitions, held seriously but in a relaxed and fun atmosphere. Prizes are generous and of high quality. Winners of the overall three-competition series are traditionally crowned the Royals of the Hill. In addition, winners of each individual competition and the most thrilling performances of the weekend are also recognized.

Poker Rando

In Poker Rando, the only way is (full speed) up! In a mass start, skins or snowshoes are strapped on and the race begins along a set rando route — with poker cards collected along the way. The ultimate winner isn’t the fastest uphill machine, but the poker table champion. So put on your best poker face and make sure your gear is dialed in!

You can join Poker Rando with a Free’kend or Junior event pass, a three-competition pass, or by registering for Poker Rando only.

Suitable gear includes touring skis with skins, a splitboard with skins, or a snowboard with snowshoes.

Huttu-Ukko Challenge

In the legendary natural-snow slope of Huttu-Ukko, riders compete in style, creativity, and control. You get to choose your own line and speed, making it a fun and expressive event for everyone. Over the summer, the slope’s edges have been cleared, opening up new lines for your imagination to run wild.

The hottest gear of the season can be found throughout the weekend at the Free’kend Test Village, right next to Huttutupa — easily accessible even on foot.

You can join the Huttu-Ukko Challenge with a Free’kend Pass, Junior Pass, Three-Contest Pass, or by signing up for this competition only. Avalanche safety gear is not required, as the event takes place within the resort area. A back protector is recommended, and a helmet is mandatory.

Aittakuru Freeride

Aittakuru Freeride

Aittakuru Freeride is a legendary style competition held in the magical Aittakuru amphitheater. The area offers both challenging and more accessible lines — and by Finnish standards, the setting is truly spectacular. There are even drops for those who dare!

The audience can watch the competition from the opposite side of the gorge and soak in the springtime vibe.

Please note that Aittakuru is an avalanche area, and skiing there outside the official event is not recommended.

You can join the Aittakuru Freeride with a Free’kend Pass, Junior Pass, Three-Contest Pass, or by signing up for this competition only. Each participant must have at least an avalanche transceiver (beacon), and a back protector or backpack is recommended.
